With Donald Trump victorious in the election and Republicans back in control of the Senate, LGBTQ+ people are understandably worried about what the future holds.
Google searches for information about moving to Canada, Mexico, Ireland, New Zealand, and Portugal were among the top 25 searches in the past 24 hours.

As an American who lives in Mexico, my social media messages and inbox has been flooded with friends and acquaintances who want to know how easy it was to move, what it’s like living in a foreign country, and if I have any suggestions for what country they should choose.
GayCities writer Brent Hartinger has covered how easy it is for Americans to move abroad and how he and his husband, Michael, left the country after Trump was first elected.
“We agree that the move was easier than we expected,” he writes. “The hardest part was the mental leap.”
But where should progressives move? What countries share our values and would welcome us with open arms? Our friends at Expatsi have done the research and provided the needed information for LGBTQ+ people to weigh their options.
“Alright, this is the straight truth: many countries outperform the US on progressive policies and have the quality of life to prove it,” they note. “You can have it too! (But you gotta vote no matter where you go!)”
They go through a litany of progressive priorities, but when it comes to protections based on race, gender, and sexual orientation, Portugal and Sweden score the highest across all three groups.
